Tendons attach bones to muscles and can suffer from overuse or injury. Inflammation or irritation of the tendons is called tendonitis and commonly develops in the joints of the shoulder, elbow, hip, base of the thumb, knee and heel area. Many activities can cause tendonitis, from raking, shoveling and painting to tennis, golf and skiing. Poor posture, stretching and conditioning also can prompt the condition.
