Revision Knee Surgery

Because knee replacement implants can come loose or wear out over time, some patients require a second surgery to replace the damaged implant. This procedure is called revision surgery and may require bone grafts and/or custom prostheses. It is a more complex operation than initial knee replacement and increases the risk for such complications as deep vein thrombosis, infection, and surgical incision problems. Patients undergoing knee revision surgery are often advised to use a support device, like a cane or walker, to protect the replacement.
