Scouting Report: Are Your Food Choices a Hit or a Miss at the Ballpark?

"The sultan of swat! The king of crash! The colossus of clout! (The colossus of clout!)" Unfortunately, I’m not talking about the one and only Babe Ruth, but the other heavy hitters at the ballpark: calories, beer and game day snacks. Stadiums across America are brimming with calories and fat-laden food. For example, did you know a souvenir silver bucket of popcorn at Yankee Stadium contains a whopping 2,473 calories? With various concession stands and individuals tempting you with their box full of peanuts and crackerjacks, it’s no wonder the seventh-inning stretch pertains to more than just baseball.

But there are plenty of opportunities to hit it out of the park with healthy options at both Yankee Stadium and Citi Field.

Home runs at Yankee Stadium:

Beware of the hidden calories lurking in two of the most popular ballpark staples, soda and beer. Highly concentrated sugars and starches, such as those found in sugar-sweetened beverages, can promote overeating and overtime, can lead to weight gain.

Be mindful of the portion sizes: a 32-oz. cola has a whopping 382 calories and the average 12 oz. beer has about 150 calories.
